Tricking yourself into eating more fruits and vegetables

Posted on September 24th, 2015 in Uncategorized by ElectricScooterBlogger |

Week 3

September is recognized as Fruits and Veggies month! We here at Electric Scooter Store always encourage you to live a healthier lifestyle, and what could be healthier than fruits and vegetables? But, we understand that introducing them into your diet is not always easy. That’s why we’ve come up with some ways that you can sneak them in:

Take some fresh, cut fruit or bags of frozen fruit and place them over breakfast favorites such as oatmeal, yogurt or cereal. If you prefer eggs in the morning, whip up some scrambled eggs or omelets and cover them in peppers, jalapenos, onions, tomatoes or olives. If you don’t have time in the morning, here are some great recipes for mason jar oatmeal that you can make ahead of time!

Ever heard of bread “gutting”? That’s where sandwich shops scoop out the center of the bread so there’s more room for fillings. Request your favorite shop do this the next time you go out for lunch, and use that extra space to fill it up with vegetables!

Many of us have that candy dish by our desk, and many of us fill it up with things that are just no good for us. To satisfy that sweet craving, why not get fruit that’s covered in chocolate? Chocolate-covered raisins are one example. If you want something that’s akin to ice cream, a chocolate-covered banana is another.

Taking your favorite veggies and shaving them down with a grater is an easy way to sneak them into different dishes. Think peppers in meatloaf, carrots in your curry and squash in your pasta.

Just remember, it takes a bit of an adjustment any time you introduce something new into your diet or lifestyle. But, with just a few adjustments, you can live a healthier, better life.

Getting your cholesterol levels down

Week 2

So, you’ve just gotten back from your doctor, and you’ve gotten the news that you need to lower your cholesterol. Now what? Well, there are a few easy things you can do to get that number down. Since September marks National Cholesterol Education Month, we thought we would touch on a few of those points:

Weight loss

Maybe you’ve been meaning to shake those extra pounds, but it just seems so intimidating! Well, did you know that all you need to lower your cholesterol is just lose a few pounds? As little as a 5 to 10 pound drop can make all the difference in that number

Healthy foods

This goes hand-in-hand with losing weight; however, there are some foods that are better than others when it comes to taking off those extra cholesterol numbers. These include whole grains, omega-3 fatty acids (which are found in fish) and leafy greens.

Exercise each day

We’re not talking about climbing a mountain—just a moderate amount of exercise every day can have great benefits when it comes to your cholesterol levels. Make sure you talk to your doctor before you start an exercise regimen, though.

Stop smoking

In addition to being bad for your lungs and heart, smoking can also hurt your body’s fight against bad cholesterol. Within 24 hours of smoking cessation, you’ll start to feel the benefits—and within 15 years, your risk of heart disease will be the same as if you never smoked.

Moderate amounts of alcohol

Notice we said moderate. Just like we said a little bit of exercise can help you, so also a little bit of alcohol can help your cholesterol levels. If you do overindulge, you’ll negate all the health benefits you receive from it!

At Electric Scooter Store, we want to see your health thrive. That’s why we carry a number of items in our online catalog that can help keep you in good working order!

Navigating stairs

week 3

In last week’s blog, we talked about shower safety and what Older Americans can do to make this ordinary task a little easier. For today’s blog, we’re going to talk about another aspect of the home that can become daunting to those with limited mobility: the stairs

A number of retirees find themselves leaving beloved homes because they just can’t go up and down the stairs anymore. Fortunately, there are a number of products that can help make stair navigation easier—and they don’t require major home renovations!

Stair Lifts

These handy chairs are mounted onto gliders, and the gliders themselves attach to the surface of each step, making them very sturdy. There are little controls on the armrests, so you can reverse, stop or start it as you need to.

Many Older Americans tend to shy away from them because they can be pricey; however, the cost of installing one in the home is much cheaper than moving into an assisted living facility! Another hesitation is that they may take up too much room. However, most stair lifts can fold up when you’re not using them, thus saving you space.

Electric Scooter Store has a wide range of stair lifts to choose from, and we’re sure to have one that fits your needs—and your budget!

These can be installed over existing outdoor steps. Many people tend to think of them as only something wheelchair users have, but they can be very handy for those with limited mobility as well! They allow you to go up and down while still using your walker or cane, and they allow you to get around without having to put pressure on your knees.

Electric Scooter Store is dedicated to helping you stay in your home well into retirement. Contact us today if you have any questions about our products or services.

Shower safety for Older Americans

Posted on August 20th, 2015 in Uncategorized by ElectricScooterBlogger |

week 2

Studies have shown the benefits of aging in home. Yet, why is it that so many Older Americans find themselves packing up and moving into a retirement community or assisted living facility?

For many, the answer is because our aging bodies just make it harder to get around. Things such as stairs, bathtubs and even tall cupboards can make life downright frustrating.

That is why the Electric Scooter Store is dedicated to carrying products that can make aging in place a reality. Today we will focus on shower safety, and a few things that can make this ordinary task easier:

  • Transfer benches. These devices allow you to transfer from your walker into the shower or bath. You place the bench in the shower, and then turn around so your back is facing the bench. You then sit down onto the bench, release your walker and turn so you are facing the shower. It eliminates the painful step of lifting your legs over the bathtub.
  • Grab bars. These can help you get out of the shower once you’re on the transfer bench—or on and off the toilet. They’re also handy to have nearby if you slip on some water, since it will give you something to grasp and prevent a fall.
  • Hand shower kit. These devices are comprised of hoses with showerheads at the end of them, as well as an on-off switch to control the water flow. Prior to getting onto the transfer bench, you place this hose onto the bench itself with the off setting selected. Then, go to the actual main faucet and turn the water on. What this does is allow you to turn the water on and off from the comfort of the transfer bench.

Electric Scooter Store carries a number of other bathroom safety products to make independent living that much easier. Stop in today or give us a call if you have any questions about how to use them.

The problem with flip-flops

week 3 pic 2

Last week’s blog touched on some of the common mistakes when it comes to applying sunscreen. In today’s blog, we would like to talk about another mistake people make when it comes to summer—and that has to do with footwear.

A lot of us like to wear flip-flops during the summer months, and why not? They keep our feet cool, they’re convenient, and sometimes they can be downright cute! But, they can also post hazards most people aren’t aware of! We’ve listed the most common below:

They can really trip you up

Whether it’s because you’re walking through a crowd or over wet grass, flip-flips just don’t have the tread and stability of other types of footwear. If you have trouble mobility anyway, they can pose an even bigger hazard. Here at the Electric Scooter Store, we carry a number of walk aids that can make it easier for you to get out and about this summer.

They can cause you to develop hammertoe

This is when your toes curl unnaturally downward. You put a lot of pressure on your digits when you wear flip-flops, and excessive use can cause the hammertoe phenomenon to occur.

They leave your skin exposed

Exposed foot skin is more susceptible to picking up bacteria from the ground, getting cuts and scrapes and getting sunburned!

They can be painful

Excessive walking in flip-flops can overwork the plantar fascia, which is the band of tissue on the bottom of the foot that’s responsible for moving the heel. Without arch support, it can get seriously sore! Since flip-flops don’t have arch support, they can be bad news if you’re walking around all day.

Don’t get us wrong; we’re not saying to avoid flip-flops entirely. But, be careful when you do use them. And make sure you get outside while it’s still nice out—the cooler weather will sneak up on us before we know it!

Avoiding sunburns

week 2 pic 2

Summer is a time for getting outside and enjoying the warmth and sun. But, since people are outside so much more often, they run the risk of getting sunburned more often. Many times, this is due to not applying sunscreen properly. Below, we have listed the most common mistakes people make when putting it on:

You use last year’s bottle of sunscreen

Look for the expiration date on the bottle. If it’s past that, then throw the bottle away. Sunscreen loses its ability to protect your skin after a certain amount of time.

You don’t apply enough

Try to get every surface of your skin covered evenly. Many times, not using enough sunscreen is the culprit when it comes to those nasty burns

You don’t apply often enough

Sunscreen does wear off after a while—and being in the water only causes it to wash off faster. Make sure you reapply once every couple of hours

You leave the sunscreen bottle in the sun

Sunscreen that gets overheated loses its potency. Keep the bottle in the shade or cooler.

You only rely on sunscreen

Sunscreen is an important element in protecting your sun from harmful UV rays, but even the best products only protect you from 98 percent of them. Wearing sunglasses, protective clothing and hats are also essential.

You only put it on when there’s sun out

The sun’s harmful rays can still damage your skin even when it’s a cloudy day. Make sure you apply sunscreen even if there’s no sun out.

Here at Electronic Scooter Store, we believe in the benefits of letting the sun touch your face and breathing in the fresh air. However, you should always keep your skin in mind while doing so! If getting outside is a problem for you because of your mobility, we carry a number of products to help you get going again, including power wheelchairs, manual wheelchairs, walkers and rollators and scooters.

The dangers of extreme heat

Posted on June 18th, 2015 in Uncategorized by ElectricScooterBlogger |

week 2

In last week’s blog, we covered staying safe in summer storms. For today’s blog, we thought we would touch on another weather-related hazard that occurs in the summer: heat. According to the Center for Disease Control, senior citizens are more susceptible to heat stroke and heat exhaustion. This is because many Older Americans take prescription medications that can alter the body’s ability to regulate temperature. Here a number of suggestions on how to beat extreme heat:

  • Take liquids with you wherever you go. Drink often, even when you don’t feel like you need to. Staying hydrated is the number one way to avoid getting sick in the heat. Avoid soft drinks and alcohol, as both can dehydrate you.
  • Keep your living space cool. This means running the fans and the air conditioning, or covering up the windows with blinds or drapes. It may be nice and sunny out, but that beautiful sun could be heating your house up to dangerous levels!
  • Be a good friend. If your fellow Older Americans are living at home by themselves, check up on them and make sure they are faring well in extreme temperatures.
  • Wearing the appropriate clothing can go far in helping you regulate temperature. Avoid heavy, black clothing and opt for something light in weight or color.
  • Eat regular meals, and make sure they are also light.
  • Keep the windows in your car rolled down, or run the air conditioning on extreme heat days—even if you don’t necessarily feel hot.

As long as you’re staying safe, summer is an excellent time to get outside, exercise and savor nature. Here at Electric Scooter Store, we have a number of products that can aid in your ability to enjoy the warmer weather. These include wheelchairs, walk aids, canes and crutches and walkers and rollators. Check out more mobility aids in our online catalog.

Weathering storms

week 3 pic 2

When it comes to summer, many people envision warm weather, ice cream and spending time outside. But, there are those occasions when wandering outside can be bad for your health—such as during a tornado or bad thunderstorm. We would like to offer a list of questions you can ask yourself to make sure you are staying safe during inclement weather:

  • Can you get to your safe space easily? For many senior citizens, the biggest hazard during bad weather is getting to the basement or bathroom. At Electric Scooter Store, we have a number of stair lifts that can make it easier to get to the basement in an emergency. We also have bathroom safety products that can help if you have to take shelter in your restroom.
  • Do you have a bag with essential supplies on-hand? Does this bag have extra medication, food and snacks and a flashlight? Make sure this bag is always in your safe area, in an easy-to-reach place.
  • Does your family know what your plans are in case of an emergency? This can be essential if you must look for each other after the storm is over.
  • Are you heeding the storm warnings and taking shelter when advised to do so? Statistically, senior citizens are the group that’s least likely to heed a storm warning. That may be because they’ve weathered many storms successfully over the years, and have seen many warnings where no major damage is done. However, all it takes is for one bad storm for heavy damage to be done. Make sure you have a weather radio on hand and heed the warnings if one is issued.

The Electric Scooter Store is dedicated to making sure our clients remain mobile, something that’s necessary if you are caught at home during a storm. Our line of wheelchairs, canes and crutches and walkers and rollators can all help you get around your home easier.

Good exercise for good bones

Posted on May 14th, 2015 in Uncategorized by ElectricScooterBlogger |

Week 2 Post 2

In last week’s blog, we covered some tasty meal options for those who are dealing with osteoporosis. This week, we’re going to talk about exercises that are good for the bones.

Just like with dieting, no one wants to talk (or think) about exercise. But, it is well worth the effort. Did you know that 1 in 5 Americans over the age of 50 are living with osteoporosis? The likelihood of bone fracture for those living with osteoporosis is reduced with regular exercise.

Below are a number of low-impact exercises that are not only good for your bones, they could also be fun! Just remember to consult your doctor before you start an exercise regimen.

  • Remember when you were a kid, and it was summer, and you couldn’t wait to hit the ol’ swimming hole or the pool? Find that enthusiasm again! A number of public pools have adult swims, where you can enjoy the water without little children splashing you. Others have swim classed for adults, so you can exercise with others your age
  • Who doesn’t like to dance? This routine combines the fun of getting your beat on along with the benefits of a workout. There have been countless stories about people increasing their bone density after taking part in a regular Zumba routine.
  • Brisk walking. This is maybe the cheapest and most easily accessible type of low-impact exercise. Take a stroll around the neighborhood, local park or the mall. Studies have shown that 4 hours a week of brisk walking can help those with brittle bones.

May is Osteoporosis Awareness Month, but here at Electric Scooter Store, we’re aware of it year-round. That’s why we stock a number of items in our online catalog that can help those whose mobility is limited by osteoporosis.

Dieting for better bones

Week 1 Post 2

Who doesn’t like an excuse to eat ice cream? Well, what if I told you that it has the same health benefits as sardines and tofu? It’s true! All three are high in calcium, which is good for your bones.

This month is Osteoporosis Awareness Month, and in light of that, we thought that for today’s blog we would talk about what you can do to prevent brittle bones—or, if you already have them, what you can do to help them. Specifically, we want to talk about how diet plays into it.

I know, I know, no one wants to think about dieting. But, it doesn’t have to be all that bad—in fact, some high-calcium choices can be downright tasty! And, they don’t all have to be dairy products, contrary to popular belief. We’re going to list a few menu items for each meal of the day that are loaded with calcium:

  • Take some yogurt and mix it up with almonds and orange slices
  • If you like cereal, think Cheerios—and pour some soy milk on! Both are loaded with calcium

  • Salads with nice, leafy greens like collard greens, spinach and bok choy. Throw on some salmon, and presto! Calcium-rich lunch.
  • If you like to pair you salad with soup, have a side of black-eyed pea soup.

  • Good news for pasta lovers—it’s on the menu! Pair it with white beans and collard greens, and you have a bone-healthy dish.
  • Same thing is true for pizza lovers. We’ve all heard jokes about anchovies on pizza, but they’re actually a really good source of calcium.

If you are living with osteoporosis, remember, it doesn’t have the final say in your mobility. At Electric Scooter Store, we have a number of products in our online catalog that can help you get around.
